Custom user types

During new user creation, administrators have the option to choose the user type as shown below:

Select user type

When creating new users from within User Administration, you will need to consider the type of user being created as the information relevant for employees, customers, contractors and so forth may differ. The following section describes how to create new user types to support differing user criteria.

  1. From the top menu, choose Administration. From the drop-down menu, choose Metadata Types as shown below:

Select Metadata Type from the Administration menu

  1. From the menu on the left-hand side of the Metadata Type screen, choose New MetaData Type:

Choose New MetaData Type

  1. You will then see the Create New Metadata Type screen where we will define our new user type.

Create New MetaData Type

In this instance, we will create a new user type called "Faculty" to represent teaching staff at a university. There are several fields on this screen to be aware of:

  • Name: This will be the name of the new user type as displayed within the Metadata Type listing.
  • Display Name: This will be how the new user type will be displayed from within User Administration during new user creation. The name you choose will be translated to other languages if a match is found.
  • Metadata Grouping: Select User Object Type from the drop-down menu to register the metadata type as a new user type.

Below the fields are three checkboxes:

  • Is Active: When checked, this ensures that this user type will be listed and available during new user creation.
  • Is synchronized with Managed System: This refers to whether users of this type are being synched from a managed system.
  • Represents Binary Data: Refers to data that is binary and not text, such as images.

Next, click Save.

  1. Now when you create a new user, you will see the new user type that you've just created from the drop-down:
