# Your profile

View your personal details, and understand which parts you can change yourself.

Your profile is the record your organization holds about you: your name, contact details, job information, and where you sit in the organization. It is also the record every other system reads from — so when it is wrong, the consequences show up elsewhere.

Open it from your name in the top-right corner → **Profile → Edit Profile**.

{% hint style="info" %}
Opening your profile may ask you to prove who you are a second time — a **Web Authentication** prompt saying *"Please use your authenticator device."* That is deliberate: your profile drives access decisions, so it is protected by a step-up check. Use your registered security key or authenticator to continue. See [Security keys](/end-user-guide-for-selfservice/change-password/security-keys.md).
{% endhint %}

## What's on the page

The exact fields are chosen by your organization, but they usually fall into these groups:

| Group            | Typical contents                                                                        |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Personal** | First, middle, and last name; prefix; nickname or preferred name; date of birth |
| **Contact** | Work email, personal email, work phone, mobile, address |
| **Job** | Job title, functional title, employee number, employee type, start date, classification |
| **Organization** | Company, division, department, cost centre, location |
| **Account** | Your supervisor, and your reporting line |

Your **supervisor** is worth checking: they are normally the first approver for anything you request, so a wrong entry sends your requests to the wrong person.

{% hint style="info" %}
For how changes are saved, confirmed, and approved, see [Editing your profile](/end-user-guide-for-selfservice/your-profile/edit-profile.md).
{% endhint %}

## Why keeping it right matters

Your profile is not just a directory entry. Other things read from it:

* **Your contact details** are where password-reset links and approval notifications are sent. An out-of-date email address is the most common reason people get stuck outside the portal.
* **Your department, job title, and location** can decide what access you receive automatically. Change department, and access may be granted or removed as a result.
* **Your supervisor** is usually the first approver for anything you request. If it is wrong, your requests go to the wrong person and stall.

## What you can and cannot change

This surprises people, so it is worth being clear:

* **Some fields you can edit yourself** — usually personal contact details.
* **Some fields are read-only for you.** Job title, department, employee number, and supervisor are typically owned by HR and flow into OpenIAM automatically. If you edit them here they would be overwritten at the next update from HR, so the portal does not let you.
* **Some edits need approval** before they take effect.
* **Some changes need confirming** with a code sent to you.

See [Editing your profile](/end-user-guide-for-selfservice/your-profile/edit-profile.md) for how each of these behaves.

{% hint style="info" %}
If a field is wrong and you cannot edit it, the fix is with whoever owns that data — usually HR or your manager. Correcting it at the source means it stays correct; correcting it only in OpenIAM would not last.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.openiam.com/end-user-guide-for-selfservice/your-profile.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
